Emric Quist is summoned to a medieval fantasy kingdom with five other people, but while the others receive rare combat, healing, and defensive classes, his appraisal reveals only the lowest-grade Construct Handler class. A hidden line briefly shows the sealed Autonomous Drone Foundry System, and Queen Adelith orders it investigated. Before that can happen, someone removes the queen’s instruction from his records, places a genuine Emergency Mobilization counterseal over the alteration, and transfers him to Valric Ternow’s dungeon guild.
The guild expedition is a trap. Valric’s people have been falsifying dungeon ratings, hiding casualties, and using cheap porters to harvest undeclared monster cores. When Split-Jaw Hounds attack, the captain deliberately throws Emric through a stone gate and seals him inside as bait. That pressure awakens Emric’s Drone Foundry System and gives him one weak Survey Drone—Mark Zero. Emric modifies it with a broken knife, uses the ruined chamber against the first hound, and preserves the drone’s cracked blue lens because replacing it would erase everything the machine learned during the fight.
As Emric produces more drones and explores the dungeon, he rescues the injured porter-healer Ysabet Roft. Together they uncover a hidden guild storehouse containing withheld antidotes, porter tags belonging to people officially listed as deserters, falsified expedition records, undeclared cores, and mysterious black fragments carrying foreign command residue. One fragment temporarily hijacks Emric’s drones, revealing that a much older autonomous network exists deeper beneath the dungeon.
Their escape route is blocked by a Brood Queen controlled through the same black-crystal network. Emric and Ysabet use flash powder, the lift’s counterweight, and the drones’ shared targeting to bring down the bridge beneath it. Unit One’s damaged lens makes it harder for the foreign signal to control, allowing the drone to tag the dominant core before the queen falls. Emric reaches Level 6, unlocks proper Hunter Drones, and chooses to repair Unit One with all its memories intact rather than replace it with a cheaper blank machine.
Emric and Ysabet emerge through the guild’s private processing yard carrying the evidence. Valric surrounds them with twenty-three armed enforcers and demands Emric surrender his drones and everything taken from the dungeon. While crossbows rise around them, Emric secretly sends Unit One beneath the yard, where it finds 318 undeclared monster cores connected through a storage lattice.
The guild opens fire before Emric can finish selecting his units. He uses Unit One as an emergency conduit, draining fifty-four undeclared cores and fabricating three additional Hunter Drones in only eight seconds. Emric orders all seven deployed machines to disable weapons and movement while avoiding lethal injuries. With Ysabet opening the yard’s rinse sluice to destroy the enforcers’ footing, the drones cut bowstrings, break weapon locks, escape magical restraints, and defeat Valric’s force without killing them.
The emergency energy draw ruptures the guild’s poorly designed regulator and causes the lower containment seal to fail. Valric locks himself and the archive guards safely inside, abandoning thirty-five people in the yard. Emric immediately ends the battle against the guild and orders his drones to defend the workers and enforcers instead. Using everything learned from Unit One’s first fight, the Hunters help the surviving guild fighters kill nine Split-Jaw Hounds, protect thirty-three bystanders, and complete the defense without a single death.
Catrin Oswell, the guild’s records clerk, exposes the nonexistent containment reserve and Valric’s false accounts. Emric’s drones catch the expedition captain burning records and recover the empty antidote case and scorched ledgers proving that missing porters had been recorded as safely returned, paid, or voluntarily departed. The city watch, Leofric Sayer, and a royal examiner arrive, and the examiner confirms that Queen Adelith’s direct verification order was illegally removed using a genuine Emergency Mobilization seal. The guild is sealed, the captain is arrested, and Valric loses his license while the palace connection behind the altered document remains unidentified.
Queen Adelith offers Emric a provisional Royal Survey charter instead of trying to seize the Drone System. Emric keeps ownership of his machines, Ysabet becomes the registered human-safety authority for operations near civilians, and Catrin receives witness protection and control over accurate inventory records. The crown grants them an abandoned survey annex, forty low-grade cores, and a lawful quarry route where the new operation can prove that autonomous hunting does not require sacrificing porters.
Emric upgrades the Foundry to Rank 2, expands to twelve drones, creates Shield units, and unlocks Auto-Hunt Level 1. A six-drone squad enters the quarry while Emric finally sleeps, clearing seventeen monsters and returning with their cores. However, Survey Unit Three discovers a hidden black-crystal staircase beneath the mapped quarry. Something attacks and captures the drone before its protection shutter can close. The foreign network begins analyzing Unit Three’s command signature and may soon learn how to impersonate Emric’s registered machines.
